City walking tour of Potsdam
Walking through the centre of Potsdam one can understand the origin of the town as a Baroque residency up to today. The town tells the story of the rise of the Brandenburg elector to one of the mightiest royal houses of Europe. Rulers like the Great Elector, the Soldier King and Frederick the Great formed it. But the younger history will also be dealt with during our walk: the destruction in Second World War, the partial rebuilding of the town in the GDR and the current trend to reconstruct the historic cityscape.
Sanssouci Park
The Sanssouci Palace is seated elegantly atop of a vineyard and was the favourite residence of Frederick II. Here he dined with the members of his “Round Table”, held forth on Voltaire, gave flute concerts and found his last peace. The park forms a highpoint of the European garden art and holds more buildings like the New Palace. In the 19th century Frederick William IV added the Charlottenhof Palace, the Church of Peace and an impressive orangery. This complex horticultural landscape is fascinating for the visitor every time anew.
